Promised Land, Choice Land, Land of Liberty, No Kings

Ezra Taft Benson said, “In the last few weeks I have had the glorious privilege of visiting eleven of our Latin American countries […] I found they were very happy to learn that to the Latter-day Saints the Promised Land, the land of Zion, includes all of North and South America.”

Ezra Taft Benson said, “America, North and South, is a choice land, a land reserved for God’s own purposes. This land and its inhabitants are under an everlasting decree. The Lord revealed this decree to the brother of Jared, an American prophet, in [Ether 2:9-10,12]”

Spencer W. Kimball, right after quoting the verse in the Book of Mormon about Liberty, said that, “It tells of the ancestries of those whose spectacular monuments are now observed in South and Central America and in the Mexican jungles.” This shows how he was open to a land of Liberty being in Mexico.

David O. McKay said, “Nations have risen and nations have perished in the Americas—a land on which it is decreed no king shall ever hold sway. To each and all of these nations the land was a blessed land, and today is even more glorious than ever. […] America, and this includes Canada and the Southern Republics, was a choice land when the Jaredites left the land of Shinar approximately four thousand years ago (Nobility of Character Essential to a Great Nation)

J. Reuben Clark, Jr. said, “And this land shall be a land of liberty unto the Gentiles, and there shall be no kings upon the land, who shall raise up unto the Gentiles” 2 Ne. 10:11 The unhappy, short-lived experiences of the Dom Pedros in Brazil and of Maximilian in Mexico seem the exceptions that prove the rule. The Spirit of the Lord was leading. (The Constitution)

George Q Cannon, when talking about kings and liberty, said that, “The Lord has also said that there shall be no kings upon this land. The attempt of Maximillian [a temporary Mexican king] is an evidence of the truth of it. Backed as he was by the power of France and Austria, particularly by France, he was killed for his attempt; for the Lord has said there shall be no kings upon this land, and that it shall be a land of Liberty unto the inhabitants thereof as long as they serve the Lord.”

Ezra Taft Benson “To the peoples who should inhabit this blessed land of the Americas, the Western Hemisphere, an ancient prophet uttered this significant promise and solemn warning: ‘Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ . . . For behold, this is a land which is choice above all other lands; wherefore he that doth possess it shall serve God or shall be swept off; for it is the everlasting decree of God Ether 2:10,12”

Mark E. Petersen, “If the modern nations of the Americas will repent and serve the Lord, great blessings will be theirs, for the prophet has said: “… this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ. …” Ether 2:12

Heber J. Grant, “I am a firm believer that this country, both North and South America, is the choice land of the world, a land choice above all other lands, according to the words of the prophets in the Book of Mormon.”

W. W. Phelps, “We are glad to see the proof [ruins from ‘Peten, in Central America’] begin to come, of the original or ancient inhabitants of this continent. It is good testimony in favor of the book of Mormon, and the book of Mormon is good testimony that such things as cities and civilization, “prior to the fourteenth century,” existed in America. Helaman, in the book of Mormon, gives the following very interesting account of the people who lived upon this continent, before the birth of the Savior.”

Orson Pratt, “Were it not for this choice and invaluable work, the history of the ancient nations who once peopled this vast continent, would have slumbered in perpetual darkness: all efforts to have penetrated the mists of antiquity would have been in vain. The magnificent ruins of [Central American] ancient cities, palaces, and temples, buried in primeval forests, would alone have proclaimed in silent grandeur, the strength and greatness of the former population. The Book of Mormon, then, as an ancient history, and the only history which we have of ancient America, is of priceless value — a gem most precious.

Orson Pratt, in his influential early missionary tract favorably utilized by Joseph Smith, taught that “the Lord gave unto [Lehi’s seed] the whole continent, for a land of promise, and he promised, that they, and their children after them, should inherit it, on condition of their obedience to his commandments.”

Elder John A. Widtsoe, “from Alaska on the north to the straits of Magellan in the south continent, the ‘new world,’ under the consecration of God, is blessed with freedom, and republican, not monarchical institutions.”

George Albert Smith, “this Western Hemisphere” should “be a land of liberty unto the Gentiles and that no king should dwell upon this land, but that He, the God of Heaven, would be our King and would fortify this land against all the nations, that this should be a land of peace and happiness, on condition that we would honor the God of this earth, the Father of us all.”

President Spencer W. Kimball, speaking at an area conference in Monterey, Mexico in 1977, “In many natural resources, the land of America is rich and will produce abundantly. This is for you [Mexican congregants], for us, and for all the good people who live upon the land of America. Protection against enemies has been promised. In all the Americas, neither kings nor emperors will combine to take the land. Great promises are given us, if we live the commandments God has given us.”
